In Aiyana's short lifetime, she has fought for her life no less than three times. At the age of 8 months, Aiyana was rushed to a Seattle Children’s Hospital Emergency Department with chest pains. A cardiac catheterization showed that a narrowing of blood vessels throughout her heart was causing her pain. Her condition was treated temporarily with two heart stents.
Less than a month later, Aiyana was diagnosed with congestive heart failure and placed on a heart transplant wait list. Not once complaining, Aiyana waited patiently in the hospital for news of a new heart. Each day, when her cardiology team stopped by her room, she had but one question: "Do you have my new heart yet?"
On July 2, 2015, one of Aiyana's cardiologists simply said, "Ask me the question you have been asking for a long time." A perfect match had been found, and her heart surgery took place the following day. Following surgery, her cardiac surgeons reported that Aiyana had done very well through surgery but that her heart wasn't working properly. By 10:30 that evening, she was placed on full life support. She was once again placed on the heart transplant wait list.
In just one day, a new heart, matching her size, age, and blood type became available, and a miracle story began. Aiyana underwent a second heart transplant, and today she is a thriving 11-year old. She plans to create a children’s coloring book for those awaiting transplants like she once had been.
